Every year the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association kicks off the winter season with the Magnificent Mile Lights festival. It is such a joy to see so many participants from hotels to restaurants to businesses working to beautify this city during the holiday season. It may be cold and windy, but when Chicago becomes illuminated like this, it is truly magical. From dining and shopping on Michigan Avenue, to viewing shows and performances, there is so much to take in. Chicago always goes all out in its efforts to transform the city into a winter wonderland. Here are some places where visitors and residents alike can take in these scenic transformations.
When visiting Daley Plaza, you may believe for a moment you are walking through an outdoor market in Germany. Here you can have a truly authentic experience with cider, strudel and all. A beautiful 50 foot tree is donated to the city every year. It stands tall in the middle of the plaza surrounded by various stands from authentic vendors from around the world. Stop by for this experience up until Christmas Eve at 4:00 p.m

While gift shopping in the Loop, you have to be sure to make a trip to Macy’s on State Street. They kicked off their tree lighting ceremony this year on November 2nd. Inside this historic department store stands a 45 foot great tree loaded with LED lit star ornaments. Their restaurant The Walnut Room is the hottest reservation in town. Book a table for next year if you missed your chance this time. See a picture below of this restaurant full of traditions since 1907! Bring the kids up to the 5th floor to see Santa before it’s too late. He will be there until December 24th.

Also, the John Hancock Tower will light up in green and red, and you can make a trip to the top of the building to the Observation Deck to see all of the city’s lights from one of the best views in town.
Our city takes so much pride in making a difference through decoration. Similar to our mission at Chicago Gateway Green, we want to honor the impact of brightening our city’s beautiful landscapes all year round.
