While environmental conservation and awareness aren’t typically associated with Thanksgiving, you can create small changes that reflect your dedication to the environment. At Chicago Gateway Green, we are dedicated to making Chicago more green. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so we wanted to share 3 easy ways to make your Thanksgiving more “Green”.
1. ‘Tis the Season
Buy foods that are in season. When considering reducing stressful holiday travel, don’t forget the foods in your Thanksgiving meal! Transporting foods that are not in season creates a large ecological footprint that are not usually included in the cost that you pay at check-out. Foods that are in season will be fresher and buying foods in season supports local economies. See what foods are in season now at: //www.sustainabletable.org/seasonalguide/seasonalfoodguide.php
When doing your Thanksgiving shopping, remember to bring your own reusable bags or purchase your own reusable bags from the store. Also, use reusable containers instead of single-use containers to store all of your yummy leftovers!
3. Buy Local
Check out a local farmers market to include fresh local foods into your Thanksgiving meal.
Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving from Chicago Gateway Green!
