Today, driving down State Street means battling other cars, buses, and taxis. But 116 years ago? Well, it was the exact opposite. A century ago, you would’ve been pushing through a solid crowd of people much thicker than any traffic today. Treehugger posted these videos here taking us back in time to when cars were brand new.
We’ve posted the video, below, filmed by James Henry White for Thomas Edison. The film itself was made to show those who had never visited Chicago just how exciting and exotic the growing city was at the time. Now, compare and contrast the video with the image of State & Madison in 2013. Today, the street view is strikingly different. Perhaps we can take notes from history and travel our streets in a more environmentally friendly way: on foot.
