The Grinch is not the only thing that should be green this holiday season. There are several obstacles set into motion during the month of December. The pressure of getting this toy, that electronic and the overall best gift. Through all of the madness we tend to forget the best gift of all- Our home.
There are several steps you can take to have a stress-free, eco-friendly and a very merry Christmas. It all comes down to the nitty-gritty of holiday cards, gift wrapping and of course the tree.
1.) E-cards- Instead of worrying about finding postage and the perfect card send your holiday greetings through the internet. It is almost 2016 the internet is a very useful tool. Simply upload your picture or greeting and email all of your loved ones it is less time consuming and quite a blast. The best part is that it takes a couple minutes to send and ensures that all of your family and friends receive them it on-time.
2.) Re-use Wrapping Paper, Bows and Ribbon- Do you find yourself running out last minute to get the best wrapping paper? “The boys would like the ninja turtle theme and the girls would love frozen”. While standing at the checkout counter you realize that the cost is ridiculous for something that will only be torn up and thrown in the trash moments later- what a waste! Perhaps you have some left over from last year, but you tend to overlook that thought. Another alternative to avoid non-recyclable metallic paper is using waste reducing wrapping alternatives: newspaper, paper bags, maps and posters. Get creative, your efforts will be appreciated more than the few dollars you spent buying the newest wrapping paper.
3.) “THE TREE”- Consider renting or purchasing a tree that can be replanted once the holidays are done or using an artificial tree that is recyclable. Live cut trees can be either be composted or you can contact one of the many communities who offer free chipping services that use chips for mulch and gardening. The next important step is decorating your tree. Making your own decorations, ornaments and wreaths can be easy, personalized and made into a new holiday tradition. You can use items from your home and keep sakes from the past that are just lying around.
Remember this holiday season that no matter how time consuming it may seem, going green is fun, easy and beneficial to everyone. The only red you will see is from your cheeks smiling ear to ear with holiday cheer.
