Chicago transportation is booming! As of October 26th a recent highway construction project to extend Lake Shore Drive has been opened to the public. This major highway is so important to people traveling in and out of the city and this is going to be a great opportunity to optimize travel time for drivers headed in and out of the city from the South Side.
The project by Chicago Lakeside Development has ensured that new bike paths and greenery be installed to make the highway most appealing to new drivers. This 64 million dollar construction program started last August. The road crews plowed through an old steel mill site on the south side to create the extension which is now open from South Shore Drive and 79th to Ewing, to 92nd.
NBC Chicago mentions “$46 million for the project came from Gov. Pat Quinn’s “Illinois Jobs Now!” capital construction program, federal highway funds accounted for $15 million and $3 million came from the city of Chicago.” A few new developments were unique to this project including: a series of new tree plantings, street lighting growth and landscaping at rainbow park.
According to CBS Chicago the mayor’s goal was to “connect a forgotten and landlocked section of the Southeast Side to the rest of the city, increasing its economic value.”
